David R. Cheney
Bio
David R. Cheney is Chief Executive Officer at Northern Arizona Healthcare, leading Flagstaff Medical Center, Verde Valley Medical Center, primary care and specialty clinics throughout Northern Arizona.
Prior to joining NAH, Dave served as President and CEO of Sutter Hospitals. He led six area CEOs and oversaw the 24 hospitals within the Sutter Health System, following his tenure as CEO of Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento.
He served as CEO of Banner Boswell Medical Center from 2008 to 2017, a 525-bed hospital in Sun City AZ. At Banner Boswell, he led his team to outstanding levels of achievement, including four Top 100 Hospital awards, the Everest Award, and two Top 50 Cardiovascular awards from Truven Health Analytics. Under his leadership, Banner Boswell also earned multiple A ratings from Leapfrog, US News and World Report’s best hospital designation, as well as numerous quality awards from many specialty societies.
Dave worked as a paramedic early in his career, providing first-hand patient care delivery. This experience kept him grounded in the fundamental values that keep hospitals on the right track. Over the following years, he accepted greater leadership roles in strategy and operations at Good Samaritan Medical Center, Banner’s flagship teaching hospital in Phoenix. His time at Samaritan culminated in his role as Senior Administrator, responsible for operations of the 635-bed trauma center.
Dave holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona and his Master’s in Business Administration from Arizona State University. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dave is a past member of the Board of Directors for Valley Vision, a civic leadership organization dedicated to improving the livability of the Sacramento region. He previously served as the 2018 March for Babies Chair for the March of Dimes.
