More than 100 Northern Arizona Healthcare colleagues participated in the American Cancer Society’s Climb to Conquer Cancer event on Saturday, Aug. 18, in Flagstaff. The NAH team raised almost $4,500 − the third highest amount raised by a team.
Among the participants was NAH Foundation Specialist Winnie Ennenga, a 30-year cancer survivor. Ennenga wanted to participate in the climb, but had an afternoon flight out of Phoenix to make. Instead of missing the event, she gave herself a head start on the seven-mile climb to Arizona Snowbowl.
So, when the rest of the 3,000 walkers started their 7 a.m. ascent for the Climb to Conquer Cancer on Saturday, Aug. 18, she’d already been walking for almost three hours.
“I knew the only way I was going to finish the walk and make my flight was to start really early,” Ennenga said. She noted the flow of hikers that passed her with words of encouragement helped her on her climb and getting to top was proof she’d conquered the mountain and was still conquering cancer.
“It was an amazing, beautiful day. The Flagstaff community came together in the fight again cancer, said Debbie Cook, senior community development manager for the American Cancer Society. “We’ll end up raising more than $225,000 when it is all said and done.”
